How to Breed the Ouroboros Dragon in DragonVale (Magnetic + Any Water Dragon)

Illustration: a serpent ring chasing its own tail

The short answer: pair a Magnetic Dragon with any dragon that carries the Water element. Breeding takes 26 hours 24 minutes (21h 7m 12s upgraded) at about 3% per attempt. The Ouroboros is permanent — no window, no time-of-day rule — and can also be bought for 1,888 gems.

Below: why the recipe is “one fixed dragon plus one element”, the fastest way to get each parent, how many attempts to plan for, and how to recognise its distinctive timer.

About the Ouroboros Dragon

Named after the mythical serpent that swallows its own tail, the Ouroboros is tied in DragonVale lore to the day the “Scar of the World” was created — some call it a bad omen, others a living promise that the Scar will one day heal. It carries the Apocalypse element, which puts it in the same family as the Zombie Dragon.

It joined the game on 18 July 2013. Originally available at level 17, its requirement moved to level 18 in October 2013.

How the recipe works

The Ouroboros uses a “named dragon plus element” rule: one parent must be a Magnetic Dragon specifically, and the other can be any dragon carrying Water. The Magnetic Dragon itself is a Lightning + Metal hybrid, so it never supplies the Water — that always comes from the second parent.

Good choices for the Water parent:

  • Water Dragon — the plain primary, simplest to keep available.
  • Seaweed Dragon (Water + Plant) or Abyss Dragon (Water + Dark) — fine if you already keep them for income.
  • Any other Water hybrid you own. The rule only checks for the element.

Getting the parents ready

The Magnetic Dragon is the only fixed parent. Keep one dedicated to this pair so other plans are not interrupted.

Parent Elements How to get it Breeding time Level
Magnetic Dragon Lightning + Metal Any pair carrying Lightning and Metal 4h 18
Water Dragon Water Primary — buy in the Market or breed Water + Water 4h 14
  • Magnetic Dragon: Also a parent of Pathfinder and Polarus.
  • Water Dragon: Opposite element: Lightning.

Both parents must be level 4 or higher before they appear in a breeding cave, so feed them a few treats as soon as they hatch.

Step-by-step plan

  1. Reach level 18 — needed both for the Ouroboros and for the Magnetic Dragon.
  2. Breed a Magnetic Dragon from any Lightning + Metal pair (4 hours), or buy one.
  3. Choose a Water parent; a Water Dragon is simplest.
  4. Level both to 4+.
  5. Run Magnetic + Water in your fastest cave and read the timer each time.
  6. Keep going — at about 3%, plan for dozens of attempts.

The odds: how many attempts should you plan for?

The DragonVale Wiki lists the Ouroboros Dragon at about 3% per attempt. That number is a community estimate, but it is useful for planning. On average you would expect to need around 33 attempts — and because every attempt is independent, some players need far more and some get lucky on the first try. The table shows your chance of having at least one success after a given number of attempts, and how long that many attempts takes with one cave working non-stop.

Attempts Chance of at least one One cave (26h 24m each) Upgraded cave (21h 7m 12s each)
10 26% 11 days 9 days
25 53% 28 days 22 days
50 78% 55 days 44 days
100 95% 110 days 88 days
150 99% 165 days 132 days

Two caves running the same pair halve the calendar time. Results here assume you clear or hatch the other eggs promptly so the cave is never idle.

Reading the timer

26 hours 24 minutes (21h 7m 12s upgraded) is an unusual length — the wiki notes that 1,584 minutes is likely a deliberate reference — and among the dragons we cover no other shares it. If you see it after a Magnetic + Water attempt, you very probably have your Ouroboros.

Breed it or buy it?

The Ouroboros is always available for 1,888 gems. Because the recipe has no time window, breeding is a good “background” project: leave one cave on Magnetic + Water whenever it is not needed for something seasonal.

What it earns and why it is worth having

It earns DragonCash: about 40 per minute at level 1, 256 at level 10 and 496 at level 20.

The Ouroboros Dragon is also a required parent for: Guerrero, Narcis. Owning one, levelled past 4, keeps those combinations open to you.

Common mistakes

  • Using a Metal or Lightning dragon instead of a Magnetic. The rule names the Magnetic Dragon specifically.
  • Forgetting the Water. Magnetic + a non-Water dragon will never make an Ouroboros.
  • Parents below level 4.
  • Starting before level 18. The dragon is locked until then.
