1. They gate the hybrid tree. Every hybrid needs its elements to come from somewhere. No Metal Dragon means no Mine, which means no Diamond in April.

Who should chase them: established players who already have gemstone income running and a full primary roster. They are a completion goal, not an early-game target.

Special Dragons are limited or rare dragons available only during specific periods, themed around holidays, seasons, anniversaries, anomalies, months and events.

This is a completely different constraint from rarity. A special dragon might be mechanically simple but impossible to obtain because its window is closed. Krampus is a straightforward Coal + Cold breed — but only during its winter window.
